t's that time of year----everywhere I look there's red and pink, chocolate hearts (I bought my bag a month ago and sadly they didn't make it to February 14th) and the hope of finding a Valentine in the mailbox from the one I love.

I can't help but think back to elementary school and all those Valentines that I addressed as a kid with my mom in our kitchen.  My teacher had us decorate a shoe box the day before with a little slit in the top---our personal mailbox just for this special day of expressing LOVE.

My mom was adamant that we double check every name on my class list so that no one would be left out.  The idea that this was a necessary task caused me to panic:  "What if I didn't get any cards?"  "What if no one liked me"?  I find myself feeling anxious just writing about it---that stress is still real today!

7 out of 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with family and friends (Dove Self-Esteem Fund).

Self-esteem is so critical in all young people but girls (statistically) suffer the most.  I was a fashion buyer for many years before I started my own company and I've seen this lack of self-esteem first hand with models, focus groups and consumers. Creating a line of cute clothes for girls was challenging because these girls---every one uniquely beautiful---were often frustrating because what they saw in the mirror didn't reflect who they truly were.

Pushing back these fears and doubts in girls is an ongoing battle that all women of every age need to make a priority.  The pressure from Hollywood, social media, and magazines make it seem impossible to be yourself because that can't possibly be good enough.

Being good enough is about being the best "you" you can be!

We need to see ourselves by understanding and believing that what we are on the inside is our true beauty.  We need to see ourselves by knowing that God made us unique and special---a one-of-a-kind treasure.  We need to see ourselves by viewing ourselves through the prism of the people that know us and love us the most.

Psalm 139:14 says:  "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made"    We are "hand-made" by the most awesome Creator---how can His creation be anything but perfect.

People seemed to be longing for another time when they thought things were better for them.  I guess I did, too.  I found myself wanting to start a clothing company for kids that would embrace all the hope and faith that I had in Jesus when I was a kid.

Made in America

It’s staggering to believe, but in less than 40 years we’ve gone from 95% to only 2% of all clothing sold in the US is made in the US.

I think most people agree it’s great to buy American but don’t realize how difficult it can be.

Pop-Up Boutique
So, we had the idea to create Pop-Up Boutiques.  We would start with friends and family who supported our mission and ask them to set up boutiques that could show the clothes, let kids try on and model their favorites and then purchase if they liked what they saw.  We would send them everything they needed, and they’d invite moms and kids to take a look.  The boutique “owner” would also receive a percentage of the sales.

He opened my eyes to how critical it is that all children feel loved and cherished and every one of us has a responsibility to do whatever we can to make sure that happens.

I Wouldn't Lie to You.....
I started thinking....maybe we could make clothes that had a message of faith. So instead of just fantasy or sports these clothes would speak to the JOY of Christianity. The hope, the tolerance, the truth of Christ's message. All the good stuff.  Then that would be a point of difference.

Girls Aren't Good At Math
The world was changing for women but not fast enough in some places.  The change wasn’t constant either.  Sometimes you could run full-speed into opportunities and then then someone would hit the brakes.  You’d either have to push through or wait for change to catch up to your dreams.

“Look for someone who shares your values…you can teach them everything about the business, but you can’t teach what is most important to you.  This is especially critical for a small business because everything and everyone is so close”.
